Procedure for an Abortion

There are 2 main types of abortion procedure, depending on the gestation of the pregnancy

For early pregnancies 3 months (12 weeks) and below, the procedure is called vacuum aspiration. This usually involves being put to sleep for about 10 minutes, during which time a small tube is placed into the womb via the vagina. An attached vacuum will then remove all the pregnancy contents of the womb.

For pregnancies 3 to 6 months (13 to 24 weeks) , the procedure is known as Mid Trimester Pregnancy Termination (MTPT) which is a more complicated affair. Hospitalization is usually required for a day or two, during which medicine is inserted into the vagina to induce natural expulsion of the pregnancy. After the foetus and placenta are aborted, the process of evacuation of the womb follows. This is basically the same procedure as used in vacuum aspiration; it ensures that the womb contents have been thoroughly evacuated.

The second method takes a little longer and is messier, so it is far preferable that an early decision for abortion be made, before 3 months if possible.

Abortion is not allowed if a pregnancy has progressed beyond 24 weeks.

The legal limit of termination of pregnancy in Singapore is 6 months, or 24 weeks, beyond which abortion of any pregnancy is illegal. Most doctors would not initiate abortion beyond 23 weeks as the abortion has to be completed by 24 weeks. The only exception to this rule would be a severe or lethal foetal abnormality but even then, special approval would have to be sought from the authorities before the procedure can be done.

Limit to how early in a pregnancy the abortion can be performed

A woman choosing to have the procedure, should make an appointment as soon as possible in order to date and to locate the pregnancy so that the timing of the procedure can be planned. This is important because is not advisable to have the procedure too early in the pregnancy, as the risks of retained products and a "missed" abortion is higher.

HARGEISA, Somalia - Officials in Somalia's self-declared independent state of Somaliland are concerned over a rise in human trafficking in the region. Children are mainly trafficked from south-central Somalia, because of the lack of government there, says a senior government official.

“Human trafficking is increasing in Somaliland. Before, no one believed that human/child trafficking existed in Somaliland but such kinds of crimes occur here…” Fadumo Sudi, the Minister for Family and Social Affairs, said during a recent ceremony to reunite a girl with her family. She had been trafficked to Hargeisa in February from Qardho, in the autonomous northeast region of Puntland.

“One day, my sister went to school as usual, but she disappeared. We searched for her everywhere but we didn’t find her. Finally, we heard from the media that she had been trafficked to Somaliland and by Allah’s mercy she was saved. We are happy to have her back,” Najib Jama Abdi, the girl’s brother, said.

In January, the Somaliland immigration office in the area of Loyada, along the border with Djibouti, sent home more than 60 minors in the company of about 200 illegal immigrants who were hoping to proceed on to Europe via Eritrea, Sudan and Libya.

Ethiopian Oromian children also travel to Somaliland without their parents in search of work; most end up in petty trade or as street children. Older people, claiming to be the children’s parents, use them to beg.

"The children are used in different ways ... and are exploited for child labour in Somaliland," Lul Hassan Matan, the director of child protection in Somaliland's National Human Rights Commission, told IRIN. Internet chat rooms, shrugging the transaction off without any remorse or fear of AIDS. Although the situation here is less dire than in Japan, counselors and social workers cite cases of girls as young as 13 having no qualms over paid to obtain pocket money.

They blame the nonchalant attitude on neglectful parents, the lack of stigma on losing one's virginity, the pervasive message of one-night stands on television and advertisements that encourage instant gratification, according to The Sunday Times. Internet chat rooms make it easy for girls to befriend teenage boys or men, said counselor Ong Lea Teng of the Singapore Planned Parenthood Association.

"The thinking of some girls is that since they are doing it, they might as well get something out of it," she was quoted as saying.

Often they want to buy things their parents cannot afford: mobile phones, the latest fashions or recreational gadgets, she said. "With so much material temptations around them and so much desire for instant gratification, for money is inevitable," Deline Koh, a senior social worker at a family service centre, told the newspaper.

There are no figures available on the trend, but Ong said hotline calls from girls asking if it is all right to have for money have quadrupled in the last two years.

Koh cited the exploits of a 15-year-old girl who used chat rooms to settle her boyfriend's debts by having paidwith three men.

A court was told last week that a 14-year-old girl who needed money to pay bills had with at least five men. They were convicted of having with a girl younger than 16. Counselors urge parents to start building bonds when their children are in primary school instead of waiting until their teens. "It's very tough to get into their world by the time they reach 13 or 14," said Want Toy Leng, manager of a girl's home.

A few month back I started to look deeper in to the so call Designated Red Light Area (DRL’s) in Singapore to see what I could find about how it is set up, what the law says and how the area are identified. In Geylang the brothels sit side be side to regular families’ homes with the only

difference being the red numbers on the brothels houses. I wanted to find out if there was a limited on the number of brothels, how the workers got there working permits, how long they were allowed to stay in Singapore, are the prices set by the government and what agency handled the medical check up for the girls.

So I started to check the laws of Singapore to see if I could find the information there since everyone knows that if you visit a brother will not be arrested or hassled by the police that may be right outside the brothel picking up the street walkers in the area since that is illegal.

The laws says:

Persons living on or trading in prostitution 146. —(1) Any person who knowingly lives wholly or in part on the earnings of the prostitution of another person shall be guilty of an offence and shall be liable on conviction to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 5 years and shall also be liable to a fine not exceeding $10,000.

(2) Any male person who is convicted of a second or subsequent offence under this section shall, in addition to any term of imprisonment imposed in respect of such offence, be liable to caning.

(3) Where any person is proved to live with or be habitually in the company of any prostitute or is proved to have exercised control, direction or influence over the movement

s of any prostitute in such a manner as to show that the person is aiding, abetting or compelling her prostitution with any other person or generally, the person shall, in the absence of proof to the contrary, be deemed to be knowingly living on the earnings of prostitution.

After reading this it make it pretty clear that prostitution anywhere is illegal and that the operators of the brothers are labile under section 148 listed next, since the girls are not allowed to leave the premises with customers.

Suppression of brothels 148. —(1) Any person who keeps, manages or assists in the management of a brothel shall be guilty of an offence under this section.

(2) Any person who is the tenant, lessee, occupier or person in charge of any place which is used as a brothel shall, unless he proves that he has no knowledge that the place is used as a brothel, be guilty of an offence under this section.

(3) Any person who being the tenant, lessee, occupier or person in charge of any place lets such place or any part thereof shall notwithstanding such letting be guilty of an offence under subsection (2) if the place or any part thereof is used as a brothel, unless he proves that he has no knowledge that the place or any part thereof is used as a brothel.

(4) Any person who being the owner of any place or the agent of that owner lets the same or any part thereof with the knowledge that the place or some part thereof is to be used as a brothel or is wilfully a party to the continued use of the place or any part thereof as a brothel shall, notwithstanding such letting, be guilty of an offence under this section.

After days of searching for the information I began to contact the government agencies for the information. I started with the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) and found nothing on their web site so I called in but was put on terminal hold so I e-mailed my question in never to receive a response. Next I contacted the police force of Singapore and again no response. My inquiry was then forwarded to several different people that I was told may be able to help me and still nothing and the health department was of no help either.

Geylang is different then the other DRL’s because it cover a large area unlike the other locations which are mostly one street out of the way of everything and easy to control. Geylang reaches from Lorong 4all the way to Lorong 36 between Geylang Road and Guillemard Road which is a large area with the largest concentration of the action taking place between Lorong 4 and Lorong 24.

Authority of courts to issue arrest and search warrants 152. If any court has reason to believe that any place is used by a woman or girl for the purpose of prostitution and that any other person residing in or frequenting the house is living wholly or in part on the immoral earnings of that woman or girl, the court may issue a warrant authorizing the Director or any public officer nominated by the Minister or any police officer not below the rank of sergeant to enter and search the place and to arrest such person.

Woman or girl below the age of 21 used or trained for immoral purposes, etc.

159. —(1) If the Director has reasonable cause to believe that any woman or girl below the age of 21 years is being trained or used for immoral purposes or lives in or frequents any brothel or is habitually in the company of prostitutes or brothel keepers or procuresses or persons employed or living in brothels or persons directly interested in the business carried on in brothels or by prostitutes, the Director may by warrant under his hand order the woman or girl to be removed to a place of safety and there temporarily detained until an inquiry has been held by him.

(2) If the Director after holding such inquiry is satisfied that the woman or girl comes within subsection (1), he may, by warrant under his hand, order her to be detained in a place of safety.

So how are these controlled? I have heard from the people that live here that Geylang was always an area to find prostitutes going back many years. a documentary it talks about the ally-ways located between Lorong 6 and 20. Walking down the allies after seeing the video you can still see many of the same building. Today the girls will not flash you their breast like they do in the movie but the effect is the same trust me.

In 1983 Singapore clamped down on the workers on the streets and the censors hit the stores getting ride of all material showing pictures semi-nude or nude pictures and topless dancing was also banded along with any other.

So the question about the brothers is this; are they allowed because it is something that you cannot stop, so try to control it in some way? This could be the case, but then how are they controlled? Can anyone open a brother in the DRL’s? I don’t know that either. Right now the girls working in the area are all Malays and Thais, is the market open to any woman that wants to work as a prostitute regardless of where she is from, I can’t find this information out also which I have asked.

Age, Race And Skin Color

It is a common perception that many SPG's are Malays and Indians because they have naturally dark skin and Caucasian men prefer tanned girls. This is a misconception.

At any one night at all the clubs I went to, I found that there are equal number of Chinese, Malays and Indian girls who date or pick up ang moh men.

Phil, a 28-year-old living in Singapore, says, "Tanned or dark skin is exotic. It's something we don't normally see at home. Even though we find dark skin, it really doesn't matter what color skin a girl has. If I fall in love with a fair Chinese, I'll still love her the same as when I fall in love with a dark Indian girl."

The women, on the other hand, are in a different situation. While the men don't have preferences for skin color or race, a true SPG (be it a Chinese, Indian or Malay) will go for the Caucasian at all times.

I once observed an incident at Carnegies. Since it was still early in the night, there was only a 20-something girl and her group of friends, 2 men-one young good-looking Chinese and one middle-aged and almost balding Caucasian, and my group of Chinese girlfriends at the bar.

While it would be obvious to choose to pick up the good-looking Chinese male, the girl, dressed in a long-sleeved shirt and pants, walked over to the balding ang moh, leaving the Chinese staring at the ceiling.

I have observed many similar instances in other clubs, no matter what race or skin color the girl is.

In relation to the stereotype, the true SPG still keeps the part about going for the ang moh man whatever the case. However, the tanned skin and short black dress is no longer a trademark for an SPG.

To spot one, you can't just observe their skin color and dress sense. You have to watch them in action.
